# MIGRATION_APPLY_FAILED

The database refused a statement of a migration or of a schema change.

## Cause

The database refused a statement of a migration or of a schema change.

The database refused a statement of a migration, or of a schema change. Inside a transaction nothing of the migration stays applied; the Why line gives the database's own reason.

## Fix

* Fix the statement, or the data it fails on, as the Why line says.
* Run the command again; `--verbose` shows the statement and where it failed.

See [Production migrations](https://nextlyhq.com/docs/guides/production-migrations.md).

## Example

```text
✗ Migration `20261020_120000_add_posts` failed.
  Why:  relation "dc_authors" does not exist
  Next: Fix the cause the Why line names, then run the command again; `--verbose` shows where it failed.
